Default Noise from transmission

I have a 350 engine with TH400 transmission, recently once engine is warm I hear a squeal noise when letting off the gas. While driving I put trans in neutral then back in drive and the noise was momentarily louder. I checked the belts and actually tightened before I drove today.

Could this be the torque converter going bad?

I was having much the same problem in my 76 so I had the tranny rebuilt, but that did not solve the problem. I then changed out the power steering pump to no avail so now I'm thinking the clutch fan is going bad. I have another good one so once I get the fans changed Ill find out. I hate throwing parts at a problem though my tranny was leaking and not shifting properly anyway so it wasn't a waste. In your case a I'd try a find a competent tranny man as see if he can diagnose your problem.

If you can make the noise happen parked in your driveway, a mechanic's stethoscope is a great way to save money on replacing the wrong part. Or even just a length of hose held up to your ear.

You need to separate the goose from the gander. After the car is warmed up, shut it off and remove the fan belt. Start it up and see if the noise goes away. If it does, then the problem's not the trans.

Buy belt dressing and spray the belts .. Cheap quick way to trouble shoot the bets . If the noise goes away replace them or tighten .... And I doubt its the TQ converter.

Its not the belts, they are tight and engines reves without the noise. A friend suggested maybe the heat shield is making the noise.
