Default Door mirror mounting

Are the door mirrors mounted in the same positions on each door? My passenger mirror is about an inch further back than the driver's.

The pass side was Dealer installed piece.... all bets are off.

Mine are the same-but maybe the customer or the dealer felt is worked better an inch back? Or it was Friday afternoon and the installer was in a hurry...

As with everything else on this car, I think Bubba may have had a hand in it! He has his fingerprints all over the car. There are 2 sets of holes on each door, one set for the wide base and the other the smaller base. I'm redoing the whole car and I just re-glassed all the holes and will start new again. I just wanted to make sure they are supposed to be in the same location on each door. I did glue metal to the underside for the mirrors to mount into.

It's my understanding that early 68's had the driver's side mirror installed a little further forward than on later 68's, and 69 up. The passenger side mirror was only ever available as a dealer installed option, and the template that comes with them only shows the mounting hole location for the later, further rearward mirror mounting position. On early 68's, you have to adjust the holes in the template a little, to match the driver's side, before drilling the holes. I'm guessing that whoever installed the passenger side mirror, wasn't aware that 68 mirrors were mounted differently than the template.

I added a passenger side mirror and used the provided template. A few weeks later after cruising around and being more focused on my outside mirrors I began to think both should have been further forward. That would have eliminated the need to turn my head so far sideways. Live and learn, I'll live with it.

No, not the same position. PS has to be further forward otherwise you can’t see looking from the driver side position.

I can add that back in the 70's I helped several friends add the Passenger side mirror. The template that came with the mirror from GM had a different configuration as the one shown earlier.
