Default AC not cold

My 80 ac compressor was cycling and not getting cool inside. I checked the charge and it was at the low green limit on the gauge. Bought a recharge kit and charged the system . The compressor stays on now with the charge reading in the upper green on the gauge but it still hasn't the real cold air inside while set on max. The system is now 134a that was professionally changed over years ago. I guess my question is , should I have pumped down the system first before adding the new charge? Never did that before and had good results on a number of cars. Any advice?

Need gauges on both high and low...
make sure your hot water is shutting off to heater
totally unknown what previous person did on conversion, oil, flush, orifice, etc...cheap enough to vacuum and start over..check orifice size etc..

If the system still had R-134a within then it's probably ok. As long as it remains pressurized then you cannot get air and non-condensible gases inleakage.
Get some gauges. Get some readings. Bypass/loop the heater core (at least for testing). Share readings.

generally if low psi is in range, you should have decent AC. also check static pressure. when engine compartment is cold. it should be i think about 10 psi higher than ambient temp.
