Default 68 Steering Telescopic Column

Hey guys,

I am attempting to rebuild my column. I have bought new bearings (through corvette central as Doc is no longer selling them) I have started to rebuild the lower end of the steering column, and found that when the spring is placed against the bearing, I find it to be scraping. I wonder if I am missing a piece in between. As the Diagram that Jim Shea (thanks) has provided and found (#20) See attached; Packing to be missing. Is this a separate bushing? or they talking about the bushing "packing" or inner race? The spring presses against the lower bearing, with the retainer help holding it in. See my picture to see how I took it apart. Am I missing what I assume to be a washer/bushing?

As the lower bearing is stationary to the jacket, and the shaft rolls within it. Having the spring pressing against this face causes a slight scrape.

TLDR; Is there a bushing that goes in between the spring and lower bearing so that they can interface? as they scrape without one. If so, Can I have that part #.

Thanks!

Based on this thread and the post from Jim it would seem that it is Felt Packing (oil soaked on top of spring to prevent corrosion) which is sort of what I'd expect packing to be (felt, leather, cotton or some heavy fabric)
