I lowered the gas tank in my 81 to replace the sending unit. There was some kind of material under the cross member and also under the tank straps. I think it was original, but its all falling apart. Does anyone know what this stuff is made of? I am guessing that its some kind of cushion. Thanks for any help.
Squeak preventor..i just shoved the old pieces in areas needed..was originally self adhesive..no squeaks..almost easier to shove in when loose but close..

Interpon,
Thanks, I will do as you did and just use small pieces where needed.
The stuff sold by Zip, CC, Paragon, etc. is just a black tar paper - similar to factory but I can't say it's exact. When I removed mine ('72), it was gas soaked, stinking, and falling apart; looked to be attached to the frame and undertank support with white latex caulking. If you can get some scraps from a building site you'll have the same sort of thing. Easiest is to install the tank and slide the strips in before tightening it down.

FWIW RC I have a few left over parts from my recent gas tank installation and know for sure that I have the two anti squeak pads that were not used..The tank and kit parts were purchased for one of our CF vendors so if you'd like me to take a good look at them just let me know...One thing I cannot say for certain is that they are just cheap tar paper strips..
