On my quest to learn as much as I can, I've stumbled across an anomaly I'm trying to get my head round surrounding a date code on a 1970 Muncie.... here are the pieces of the jigsaw...
Tim plate date code - A28 - Jan 28th, 1970
VIN number stacks up as the same date on various date finder websites
Engine number matches VIN plate
Serial number on transmission matches VIN and engine
All good so far.....
However - the code on the transmission is: P 0 M 0 7 A
Which various websites tell me was made on the 7th Aug, 1970.... which is impossible as that was 7 months after the car was assembled.
If the transmission was built in Aug 1969 (which would make sense), surely it would be P 9 M 0 7 A?
Or was the first '0' for 1970 to reflect the model year of car, rather than year of build?
he 1969 to 1974 Muncie got a ratio designating letter at the end of the date code. An example would be P0C25B. This decodes to 1970 (0), March (C), 25th, M21 (B).
Note: The ratio designation letter didn't appear until around October 1, 1968 for the 1969 model year so any Muncie in a 1969 Chevelle dated August (M) or September (P) would probably not have the A, B, or C designation.
