Default Inherited C3

So thankful for this forum. My father Clams Canino recorded a lot of his work, thoughts, and opinions on here...which is helpful and valuable. Unfortunately, my father passed away in December. I’ve now inherited what was like another sibling to us growing up....my dads 1968 C3.

I know there are a million and one tire threads...but I was wondering if someone could help me understand. Looking into the forums, it looks like my dad ordered Indyhawk 255-60-15’s for all 4....11 years ago. I’m trying to replace the tires so I can get it on the road and take it on a tour to spread my dads ashes. I was thinking, since my dad said somewhere that he had to do a “small trim job” on the front tires, that I might be better off to go with 245-60-15’s. But, can someone help me out, even just shoot me a message explaining the brands....he had the BF Goodrich tires, then switched to Indyhawk (which they don’t make in that size anymore.) I want to order tires that A) fit B) I won’t look like an idiot because they are so wrong for the car. I won’t be showing or racing the car, but I also don’t want it to look too far from how it’s supposed to look. Any input would be welcome!

-Ariel

245/60/15 is what I run. BFG just started making that size this year again. There are a few other brands in that size too, Cooper, Hankook, etc, but personally I would stick with the BFG. Just go to the usual tire dealers (tirerack, discounttiredirect, etc) and use their tire size search

Ariel, first of all, my condolences on the passing of your father. You can continue to honor him and your memories with that beautiful '68.

On your tire question: we have a '68; it had Cooper 255-60R-15's on it when we bought it. The tires were nearly new tread wise, but were something like 8-9 years old so we replaced them last year at this time with BFG 255-60R-15's and there is never an issue with rubbing, etc. A bit more tire like this, while not 'stock', sure looks better than stock and they handle well. Some have had some issues with the white letters on BFG's, we have not. You're wise to replace the older tires.

Best of luck, and tell us more about your car! Pics, etc. Paul

Hi Ariel,
I also offer condolences for your father, but congrats on your Vette.
I was a die hard BFG fan for a few decades until recently. You may or may not have heard about their ongoing problem with the raised white letters turning brown with no way to whiten them. For this reason alone I have dumped them. I now run Mickey Thompsons. Very comparable to the BFG in every category and priced fairly.
Size wise I would run 235/60/15 up front to avoid any rub issues and 255/60/15 rear for that nice fatty look. I have run this combo on many of my C3's and it looks/performs great.
Good luck!
Cheers, Greg

When your dad was talking about trimming the wheels , I would bet he trimmed the lip around the wheel wells so the fatter tires wouldn't rub. If he has 255's on there now , I think you could put the same size on again. I run 255's on my '78 without any issues. I hope you enjoy the tour with your dad.

Default Condolences and sorry to hear about Clams

Condolences and sorry to hear about Clams.

Always felt a kinship with Clams as he was into outboard motors too. I believe Clams was active on outboard motor sites too. Had not seen him here in awhile, he will be missed.

I always install 255 60 15's, on 2 different '68's. Might have to trim fender for extreme turns. Hope this helps

Thank you. He definitely was into outboards. He was an outboard (mostly Mercury) mechanic. He probably was very active on those forums too!

I too remember seeing many posts from your dad. Also sorry to hear of his passing. FWIW, I run 255/60/15 tires on all 4 corners of my 79 with no problems of fit, but i've read that the geometry may be a little different on the older C3's. I do have the above mentioned problem of the letters not being as white as i'd like.
