Default Exhaust header for 1981 Vette

I am going to be doing the top end on my stock 81 vette. I will be adding the following components to it over Thanksgiving.

Trick Flow 350 HP Super 23 Top end engine kit - K314-350-400.
Edelbrock Pro-Flo 4 EFI system 35760.
Edelbrock Universal EFI Sump Fuel Systems 36031.

I have a buddy from Ohio staying over during Thanksgiving. He has owned Jenkins Auto Service in Mogadore Ohio for 30 years (he has the experience) and I want all of the parts sitting on my shop floor when he shows up.

I would like to replace the exhaust headers with an upgrade. Does anyone know of a set that will definitely fit? Any help is appreciated.

Sorry, I should have added I will need an 02 sensor bung. Would prefer a header with one already placed properly.

Stan's Tri-Y headers will fit very well. I installed a set on my '73 earlier this year along with a new engine and the Edelbrock Pro-Flo 4 XT EFI system. I worked with Stan to modify the header a bit because it was touching my Borgeson powering steering box. His new design now works with factory steering or the Borgeson steering. It also works with straight plug heads or angled plug heads. I have a large capacity Moroso oil pan with wings and the headers clear that just fine. They also clear the larger 1 quart oil filter. I'm using a mini starter but I believe the standard starter works with these headers too. The headers have the ball and socket type connection on the collector. Stan provided a short piece of exhaust with the matching ball & socket and installed the 02 bung in that piece so I could orient it the way I wanted. Works very well.

Thanks for the tip. I will look into them. How do you like the Pro-Flo? Also, what type of fuel delivery did you workout? I thought that I had an electric pump in the tank that I was going to use to feed the fuel sump I am going to install in the engine compartment but now I realize I have a mechanical pump on the engine so I have to figure out how to get fuel to the sump.

I like the Pro-Flo. Throttle response is outstanding and the car runs very well. I've wanted EFI for a long time now and I'm liking the choice.

I had a few issues to sort out but nothing too major (vacuum leak in the headlight circuit caused erratic idle problems, a few bad fuel injector o-rings resulted in minor fuel leaks, and I had to dial in the throttle cable as I had it bit too tight at first for the IAC valve to work properly. The worst problem I've had was the Edelbrock ignition coil they recommended failed at 600 miles and left me stranded in rush hour traffic. That coil (Edelbrock 22746) has been out of stock for awhile now which makes me suspicious there is a known problem or a bad batch. I don't recommend using it. I ended up replacing the coil with an MSD Blaster 2 8202 which is on their approved list. So far so good. MSD also offers an epoxy filled coil (#8222) that can be mounted in any position and is advertised for high vibration applications. It has the same overall specs as the 8202 but I have not verified with Edelbrock that it is a match for the Pro-Flo system.

As far as fuel delivery, I bought a new tank from Tanks Inc along with their fuel pump, wiring kit and pressure regulator. I replaced my factory fuel lines with NiCopp hard lines along the frame rail and used a high pressure hose kit from Tanks Inc for the flexible portion of the lines.

Edelbrock's tech support is not ideal at the moment. They lost a very good tech support guy earlier in the year and the rest of the team has struggled to provide good service. They do have a Pro-Flo 4 forum on their website and their tech support tries to respond to questions.

Good luck,

DC

Headers will fit, but you will need to modify or replace your transmission crossmember to get a true dual exhaust.

Sidepipe headers also fit.
