My Dad was developed a clunk in the rear of the 82 on his trip to Carlisle. The car had sat for the past 3 or so years due to driving other cars. The rubber for the pinion support mount completely fell out and it appears a fluid destroyed it. Following the fluid trail led to the spare compartment jack tray. It appears the fluid has taken the paint and under coating off this area. My dad suspects gasoline and I’m guessing possibly brake fluid. The gas tank appears clean. I’ve asked for pictures and am waiting. Because there is no smell of gas I’m thinking that’s not it. What lines run in this area that could account for a fluid leak that removes paint undercoating and destroys rubber?
I'm pretty sure the hard lines go right through that area. But, if it is brake fluid then there is a sure fire way to tell. The reservoir will be much lower (keeping pad wear in mind as it relates to fluid level) and of course a brake pedal that isn't firm. Brake systems are a bit sensitive to changes...
I would not eliminate fuel just because you can't smell it. Could be it only shows up when the tank is completely full and then when driving around the problem occurs. The fuel evaporates before it is really noticed. Just a thought... We don't notice a fuel leak because it is a consumable and rely mostly on the odor to detect it.
