Default 1968 steering shaft collapsed?

on my 68, i am having difficulty with spline engagement on the steering coupler. i have 5" if shaft protruding past the column, was thinking that it might have been collapsed

a bit by the previous owner. can anyone tell me if the 5" measurement is about right? Thanks - Ryan

With the box in place, correct rag joint, the column flange should bolt to the rag without distorting it into a "S" bend. If it does the column is collapsed. Collapsible columns started in 67 if I recall correctly.

My '68 has a collapsible column. I bumped the shaft in about an inch to remove the old rag joint. A month later I installed the new rag joint and had to put a pair of vice grips on the steering shaft and tap on the vice grips to extend the steering column shaft into the new rag joint splined hole.
