Default 1968 Fuel Door Question

I recently gave my buddy a 68 only fuel door / bezel. The door was riveted onto the hinge as it should be. The emblem was also riveted onto the lid, as it should be. He has an early car. I found another one in my pile (the pile my wife hates). It also has the riveted lid so I assumed it was 68. This one has no emblem on it, though you can see the outline where it was. My question is the holes on this latest one are definitely bigger than the one I gave my buddy (the one with the emblem still attached). To me, it looks like the emblem that was on there used the later one that used nuts to hold it. Could it have been replaced? Maybe. So, riveted lid but later emblem attachment. It also has a different part # than the one I gave my friend.
My 68 is a later car (late May build). I have owned it since 1985. My gas lid is riveted on but the emblem uses nuts. Is the riveted emblem an early 68 thing?

Thanks, John

AFAIK,
all 68 had the riveted emblem and hinge (and hold down clip) no early or late
69 and 70 had bolt on hinge and emblem, still had the riveted clip
71+ had bolt hinge and emblem and a spring on the hinge instead of the clip

Sounds like someone drilled out the emblem and replaced with a later one

I was wondering the same thing however the part # on the bezel was different than the other one. Both had riveted lids. I need to check the Bizocco book.
Thank you for responding.

John,
my June 14th build has both attached with revits.
I have original parts still on this car ranging from April and May date codes so I believe it is orig from St Louis to car. I can look tomorrow in better light for a GM# if needed.

Thank you. Wondering whether early 69s had riveted lids. The part # thing is throwing me off!
Stay safe, John

I checked the newest judging guide. Seems, according to it, the change to acorn nuts for the emblems and screwed on lids started late May 68, but notes some original cars could still have riveted both or a mix of both after then.

Who knows. Thanks for the replies fellas. Stay safe, AJ.

I bought my car new in December of 68... it has acorn nuts for the emblem and phillips head screws for the hinge.

I've got an Oct 67, 68. It has the riveted hinge, and a bolt on emblem. To tell if it's a 68 hinge look at the spring retainer that holds it up. The 68 had the sideways spring steel clip that clips to hold it open. 69 and later have a vertical spring that supports the lid open

Thank you. Yes it has the riveted spring that holds the door open. Same as the one I donated to my friend.
RR, do you have any information regarding your fuel door, meaning, do you feel it is original ( or at least is the emblem) to your early car?

Thanks for all the input. Take care.

Honestly I dont know for sure, I didnt know that any of the emblems were riveted on so thats new to me. I feel my car may be a repaint so my rear emblem could be a replacement, but the hinge and broken latch spring are definitley 68.
