I recently cleaned up my battery compartment. All hold down brackets and reinforcements are in good shape. The PO had the battery terminals facing forward and did not have the clamp in place.
I flipped the battery so the terminals are facing the back of the car and installed the clamp (bracket) and hold down screw. The clamp does not sit tightly against the lip on the battery, so I can still rock the battery front to back quite a bit. I placed a thin "acid mat" beneath the battery. If anything , it would raise the battery slightly to meet the clamp.
The battery that is in the car is a Group 75. I've read that Group 78 is what many use, but notice that the width is the same as a Group 75, so it would not help. Any advice as to how to seat the battery securely would be appreciated.

Do you have the 'factory' or a reproduction battery hold down clamp? I had a similar problem on my '73 and could not get the clamp to tighten on the battery until I got a reproduction clamp from one of the Corvette parts suppliers.

The clamp is actually an OEM part. Perhaps I need to go aftermarket to match a modern battery?
Thank you fastimes for the battery clamp question and pics and also Ralph Spears for providing the correct oreintation of it. The clamp in my 73 was installed wrong (by me during the last battery change) and is now installed correctly.
