Default '71 Exhaust Diameter

The exhaust pipes on my '71 350/270 coupe is long gone so I can't confirm what the exhaust syatem diameter was.

I still have the ram horn exhaust manifolds with a 2" exit diameter at the bottom.

When looking at exhaust system replacements on line, I see some that are 2" and others that say 2" to 2.5"...

What was an original system?

Is it possible and a good idea to go from the 2" ram horns to 2.5" pipes & muffler?

What about headers, are most 2" or 2.5"?

Thanks for the help,

Paul

Your base Corvette was a 2 inch system. The 454 and LT-1 were a 2 1/2 inch system.

As mentioned, LT1 small block used 2.5 inch exhaust, but it started at 2 inch exiting the ram horn exhaust manifold, almost immediately goes to 2.5 inch, then exhaust tips are back at 2 inch. I just installed the Corvette Central 2.5 inch system with Magnaflow for ram horns on my 72. Basically the LT1 setup with Magnaflows. Is it a good idea to go from 2 to 2.5, I would, say it would flow better if ram horns were 2.5 outlet. But that's how the factory did it 2 to 2.5. You can get some import ram horns that have 2.5 outlets. But if you use them the CC system, will need modification.

Thanks Guys.

Dino, Is your 72 a BB or LT1? If not, why did you choose the 2.5" system over the normal 2"?

Paul, my car recently was a base 350 (L48) that had 2" exhaust with Walker Super Turbos (slightly louder than stock). Sound was good - not too loud, but not aggressive. I just did a head swap to a smaller chamber size bumping my compression to 9.3:1, and added a roller cam. I retained the QJet, factory iron intake, and went back to the ram horns (I had headers) to keep a factory look. Given the power upgrade, I decided to use the bigger 2 1/2" system with Magnaflows. I'm not sure what sound you are after, but this setup is much loader than what I had before. Not sure if its the added compression, the aggressiveness of the cam or the 2 !/2" exhaust, but it is loader than I expected. Lots of variables affect the exhaust note. Sounds good, but did surprise me. There is quite a bit of trial and error to get the CC exhaust to all line up clearance wise if you do not get the welded muffler and intermediate pipe. I had to replace my tranny mount which was original. It had compressed over the years just enough where I had clearance issues where the exhaust goes through the crossmember. My story. Hope this helps.

Here. Go read this. You can install 2.5" ramhorns and use 64-65 downpipes that do NOT neck down and then the rest of the 2.5" exhaust to the back.
I had several sets of headers on my 68 for 30+ years and finally just went to 2.5" RamHorns a couple of years ago and tied them into the rest of 2.5" system. Keep an eye on where you order exhaust parts....shipping matters since some are rather large and clumsy. The exhaust pipes I got were all labeled Corvette Central but follow the post for options on where to order for best shipping options.
I'm fairly confident that the exhaust parts you need are listed in the post below.
BTW--it all bolted together just fine....
