I have all the glass and a few body panels in my 82 etched with the VIN, small text. Like mentioned, it was about if your car was stolen thing. While I was replacing my complete interior, I found the original stencil/template that was used for the VIN buried under the carpeting ...BONUS! I was pretty happy that that was there so I could now redo any glass in my car including the windshield if ever replaced with the original stencil to matched everything.
