I have come across what I think is a very rare engine and would like your help to verify it’s authenticity.
What I know:
-engine suffix is CPW (1971 ZR-2 454)
-has drilled port near oil filter (4 bolt main indicator?)
-heads are aluminum casting 842 (not correct for ZR-2?)
- there is no vin stamped on the front pad
-snowflake intake 3963569
-I was told it has “dimple rods”
My thought is, this is a rare shortblock that someone put the wrong heads on. Could this maybe be a service engine that GM put together with spare parts?
Matt,
Can you include a better picture of the stamp pad? I find it impossible to read. We can help see if it is a real GM stamping or something else. CPW is also the stamping for a mundane LS6.
What is the casting date at the back of the block? The casting date can help determine service block versus one from the correct time frame.
The valve covers look to be 72-style. They definitely are not 71.
The face of the right head above the stamp pad has something strange going on.
We will help figure out what that is to the best of our ability.
There is no ZR2 motor. The ZR2 corvette received an LS6 motor. You may have an LS6 engine but like 62 stated, we need to see a very clear engine pad picture.
Thank you guys. I spoke further with the owner and he provided a lot more information. Basically confirming this is an LS-6 engine but without the vin we cannot tie it to any specific car. And the heads are wrong for an LS-6 but still very desirable heads.
Date is L1770
This engine will be for sale soon if anyone is looking for one.
thanks

Looks like it could have been a left over engine. If it was part of a production run but never used in a car it would have been sold over the counter after the end of the production year. No real issue. Still a valuable assembly of rare, desirable parts. Worth what ever the owner can get for them.
Knowing that the block had been decked would have been helpful.

Engine suffix “CPW” 1971 corvette LS-6

842 aluminum heads from L-88/L-89 67-69
Winters intake 3963569
Dimple rods

512 block This engine would be perfect for an 1971 corvette LS6 clone build or Chevelle/nova/Camaro. The heads are technically incorrect for an LS6 as they should have been 074 so someone swapped them at some point(but they are very desirable 842 aluminum heads). This engine has less than 500 miles on it and comes intake to pan as shown. The deck surface has been decked so there is no vin stamping but the “CPW” is still barely visible.
