Ok, I have the original warranty pamphlet (as well as several other pieces of paperwork from delivery) but the warranty pamphlet has the buyers name address etc , which was in Carrolton TX, but on the back of the pamphlet in the Selling Dealer imprint box, there's hand written:
GM Overseas Export Division
Thru:
Rosenthal Chevrolet
Arlington VA.
So, I wonder if the buyer bought the car in TX, but had is delivered to Rosenthal for export, because maybe they were in the military? Anyone familiar with the process back then have any input?
Do a search for Rosenthal Chevrolet in the C1/C2 section. I recall a few posts about the dealership, including one not to long ago, when the owner passed away. If I remember right, one member's father was a salesman there, and another member worked there. I believe more than a few members mentioned that Rosenthal did a lot of business with service members. You may want to ask about Rosenthal in the Southeast Region Section of the Forum as well, since that section covers Virginia.
Here's a start for you. This is the post covering the passing of the owner, but there are others on Rosenthal in the C1/C2 Section, and there may be some in C4, C5 or other sections of the Forum too.
In 1978, dealers were adding "surcharges" to the tune of $5k per 78's buyer was confronted with this scenario. He joined the army and waited until he got to Germany to place an order through an Opel dealer, saving the $5k and had it delivered to his home dealer in Silver Springs MD. I have all the original paperwork. Even the buildsheet will document both dealer of origin and dealer of delivery. This surcharge practice may have carried over to 79 due to the popularity of Corvettes during those years. Think in terms of dealer that ordered the Corvette and dealer that provided delivery. GM export coordinated the process.
So, it does sound reasonable that the original owner of mine was in the service. I know my car spent time in Texas because that's where the previous owner bought it. The previous owner was in the service in Oklahoma, and used it as his only car, and this was just 15 years ago, and he was a young F-16 pilot in the Air Force. He took the car with him to Oregon and eventually to VA, where he was stationed at Langley AFB. I don't know if he bought it from the original owner or not, and have no other records of the car besides his and the original paperwork. Still and interesting story to piece together.
