Default Help with 1977 information

How early in the 1977 production did they change the brushed horn button to a interior color coded horn button?

The brushed horn button was subject to a NHTSA recall on July 28, 1977.

So if my fathers old 77 had a metal horn that means it never had the recall completed. Thank you guys

yup, lots of people didn't bother taking it in for the recall. was plenty dumb. supposedly the aluminum horn button could blind you with reflection from the Sun. I still have the brushed aluminum one in my car. never been blinded.

To be precise...the 1977 brushed aluminum horn button was introduced with N37 tilt-telescopic column through VIN 418637. After VIN 418637, the horn button is painted interior color. The lock ring was brushed aluminum between VIN 413504 and 418637. Before and after that, the lever was color keyed. Brushed aluminum button and lock ring were recalled due to reflections from sunlight that could affect driver vision

And lucky for me. I have both the button and lock ring in brushed aluminum. looks great. and after driving the car for over 30 years. never blinded!
However, ride any Harley with a chrome speedo dash on the tank. I get blinded almost everyday! I'm a Harley Mechanic. And yet they STILL make them this way.
Like I said, dumb recall.

could you post a picture of your steering wheel. I’d like to try and recall if my fathers vette had the brushed lock ring as well. It would help narrow down my hunt for the vehicle to a specific VIN range. Thank you.

I located a copy of the recall letter, maybe I can find it and post it for you to see. It was a voluntary recall that many did not follow. Those aluminum covers, with the letter, are collectors items now. I'll look and see if I can find the letter.

I have a copy of the recall letter I can probably figure how to scan it and send you a copy. I purchased a lock ring and horn button for my 77 and another member on here was kind enough to get me a copy of the recall. If I remember correctly it was the guy you sold yours to David.
