I am at the point of reinstalling the spare tire carrier. I don’t recall exactly how it goes in. I just remember that there was no spare and the carrier was a little rattly.
Can the carrier be installed rattle free without a spare tire ?
(This being Belgium, simply finding a replacement is not that easy.)
Mine is empty and rattle free. However, after rummaging through the compartment behind the passenger seat, maybe its time to make some alterations. The compartment has an array of HEI parts, a jack / handle, lug wrench, extra fan belt and tools I hope I never need. Can barely close the lid. (insert Boy Scout Motto here)
Perhaps a waterproof tote (Rubbermaid?) loaded with all those "breakdown" tools should go in the spare tire carrier, which can be locked. Who needs a spare right?
Or maybe install a spare tire, up-side-down with a tool box inside the rim? IDK

I use a spring around the bolt between the carrier and mount, I can't see why a chunk of heater hose wouldn't do the same, just cut it so it's the right length so it's compressed a bit

What someone needs to invent is a fabric or plastic type "insert" that would fit into the tire carrier that would serve as alternate storage............inventors, figure it out and make some money.
I ran with a bare tire in mine for awhile.....but it seemed stupid. I don't like the empty look of the back end without the carrier. So this winter, I removed the bare tire, and simply took rubber tubing with the inside diameter the same as the two front attach bolts, and cut them to the length that preloads the front cover, keeping it from being about to rattle. What may be interesting is if there are any "sound" differences without a spare installed.......with two mufflers on each side, there may be an "echo chamber" effect?????

Mine is only used as a adult beverage cooler, has not had a spare for the last 36 years I have owned it. 12 pack and 3lb ice fits perfect for get together

I know they are hard to find where you live but why not get a spare tire??
I know a lot of cars don’t come with them anymore but I always have one and the associates tools to change it. Sure flats are rare but it sure is nice to be back going in 10 min then waiting for who knows how long.
lots of good suggestions for ways to make it not rattle. Why reinstall it? For the look?
Yep. I replaced my big old spare about 18 months ago with a tire from walmart ---I got the equivalent diameter tire to the 235/60R15s and it was cheap ...let me look up the price.....205/70R15 Goodyear Viva at Walmart for use as a spare 35 bucks and $56.20 after all it's incidentals. I like having a spare and I should have been keeping an eye on it.
It's not really a "big" tire when compared to the 255s.
