So when I bought my 81 was told by the dealer it was a survivor with 19,543 miles. They bought it from the step son of the guy who bought it new as the story goes. I did a vin check a few months ago from Experian, Auto check and it came back with no problems but only shows it purchased in 1995 then sold in 2014, step son and then me. Is this strange that it only goes back to 95? Are there any other ways of finding out or going back to the original purchase? Love my car even if it has 119,543 miles on it but would be nice to know. Its a very clean car underneath , original exhaust system with converter and when I replaced the radiator and water pump they seemed original as well. Thanks for the tips as usual!

I'm surprised you got online data that far back! What's available all depends on the firm entering the data; prior to the internet explosion in the late-90s/early-00s it would have required the firm to have an incentive to transfer digital data to the standards in use over time. There was little to no benefit to update sales, service, and ownership records from a car sold 20 years prior. Even since then the companies have got to have some reason for tracking such stuff. I tried locating my own DMV record from a car I still own to see when I first registered it and the state told me they regularly purge old records if the car has not had an active registration for 7 years. Since I dropped the registration more than 10 years ago (looong restoration) I was out of luck with the DMV record of the car.
