I've read with great interest (and marvel) at the repairs you all have accomplished on your car's birdcages/support structures. I've really enjoyed reading about ss400rscamaro's ongoing project, but I'm not one that would attempt to do that kind of work myself. If I had a shop it would be fun to take a few welding anf fabrication classes (many) and try my hand, but I don't. I have a two car garage that has three car's worth of stuff in it and not much else.
So question... In the Birmingham/Chattanooga/Atlanta/Montgomery diamond, does anyone have a recommended shop or specialist to recommend to inspect/repair a rusty birdcage? Maybe more importantly... to give me an honest opinion as to the cost involved with repairing my vehicle upon inspection. I of course do not want to be just $15k away from a $10k Corvette.

Kind regards to all.
i think you can do an inspection in pictures on this forum and its free!!
pics videos etc.. you already know where to look.. and the places you cant see require $$ to rip apart anyway
could be much better than you think.. or a disaster
I don't think he was saying we ALL have rusty cars. Pretty sure he was saying everyone with rust issues. Although post could be misinterpreted that way.

Can't help on a location since I am in MN. I did have rust across my upper windshield, even some holes. Like you, I did a lot of reading on this forum and quickly realized repairing that was way beyond my skill level. I asked around and a guy that had a similar repair recommend a shop. I was estimating/budgeting $1,500 for the repair. I was quoted an amount but it would go up or down once he dived into it. It ended up being under a $1,000. I guess my point is without seeing any pictures, I don't know how anyone can tell you how much you will be into.
You might want to call a few places in you area and ask questions, have you repaired C3's, Yes, have you done any frame work, yes. Have you done any bird cage work, huh, what do mean. That would be a walk away statement for me. I did save money since I gutted the interior. Good luck.

I imagine the first thing to do would be to see exactly what birdcage damage you are talking about. If it's localized to the windshield frame area, then it probably wont be too expensive. I recently took out my windshield to take a look and I am very glad I did. In my case, the damage from rust was pretty light and was localized to the windshield frame area, the kickpanel areas and upper support were rust free. In that case you can do (as I am) much of the work yourself. On the other hand, if there is damage to the birdcage up and down the kick panel area, we are taking about major work to fix it. Im sorry I dont know of any specialists in your area, but I'll bet the local Corvette club does. A guy near me that does this told me he is seeing a lot of this in the past 10 years, and many owners dont even know the rot that is present in their windshield area. I know it is somewhat out of your area, but Van Steele in St Petersburg area does this sort of work.
