Trying to assemble the upper end of this and when I try to compress the upper bearing spring to allow the c shaped clip to be inserted onto the shaft, the TT shaft continues to pull upward, not allowing insertion of the clip. Yes I do have a bolt tightened to prevent the shaft coming upward. But before the slot will appear for the clip, the TT shaft starts moving upward. I didn't want to over tighten the screw in the center of it. What do I do to prevent the TT shaft from moving upward?

As I recall, you need to install a screw where the tele bolt usually goes otherwise it just pushes back. I used a set screw so it didn't get in the way of the spring compressor tool.

I made a screw to insert and hopefully lock the shaft. It still slips when approaching top pressure. Don't want to really break something. I even put the whole column in a press, put more than enough pressure on it and still could not get it to uncover the slots enough to get the clip to slide in. I put a new upper bearing in this and there was an upper race that went over the bearing, then I put the next item over the race. It was like a "collar" that was split. I understand it preloads the bearing. I'm wondering now if I'm running into "coil bind". So I took out the spring, put the signal cancelling cam back in with the lock plate. When all is pushed down it still does not allow the slots to be but maybe 50% uncovered. Is it possible for the shaft housing that has the slots cut in it, to move away from the driver and toward the firewall?
You have to really make sure the inner bearing ring and the split collar don't bind , stand the column straight up when your doing this part of the rebuild. I have seen this often .
I will double check that tomorrow. Do you know if the hollow shaft that has the "channels" for the horseshoe clip can move downward? That would explain it if it can..
1. Make sure your bearing races are fully seated. I had to use a socket and old race to fully seat mine.
2. I stuck a smaller cutoff bolt into the tele section along with the rod then another short piece of cutoff bolt that screwed in to lock it.
