Here is a pic of my gas tank. As you can see the fuel was seeping through the filler neck as the car is driving.

Thanks for the photos for the cause of the gas leak on your car. I'm sure that many of our cars have the same problem either minor or possibly like yours a real problem. As stated after 40-50 years original cork shrinks and causes a leak.
Good point about the distorted filler neck. Mine was slightly distorted so i fixed the metal flange and was careful not to over tighten them.
The bolts are very small so they can distort the flange easly.
I had no ideal the tank was leaking. I dropped the tank to look for the tank sticker and replace the fuel lines ( cracked fuel lines). The over flow hose was detached from the rubber boot around the filler. There was only a small amount of fuel left that did not drain from the tank. When i tipped the tank over to clean it the fuel leaked out.
