Default 1969 Heater Removal From Engine and Inside

So I originally wanted to remove the heater core from the engine side and several of you all told me this could be done. This is true, and I wanted to post some pics on what to look for for those contemplating doing the same. In the end, I had the dash torn apart to see if there was any corrosion under the windshield frame so I also removed the heater box from within since I wanted to make sure all the heater box doors and vacuum controls were working. I watched many videos on removing the heater box from the inside and it's really not that difficult, so why not? My heater control box had 4 studs that passed through the firewall and was bolted thru the outside heater enclosure. take off those 4 bolts and the inside heater box is ready to come out after detaching 3 vacuum lines and the control cable.

Heater box removed - you can clearly see the 4 studs that hold the heater control box tot he firewall.

For those replacing the heater from the outside, you can see the rubber gasket that covers the clip you must remove to slip the heater core itself out.

View with rubber gasket removed. Take those 2 screws off and you can remove the heater core..

View with heater core removed - unlike some videos I watched, my box was not screwed together - it was riveted. I'll assume this box has not been out of the car since 1969! And that foam stuff that covers the door - can that be replaced?

View from the passenger side through the firewall where the heater box is mounted.

Cleaned up the engine side heater box cover and lubed the blower shaft and tested it. This thing was covered with layers of dried on goop - pretty sloppy job from the factory! I suspect there was a gasket between the blower motor and the outside housing, but I never found one..

Yes you can scrape off the old foam and glue on some new stuff to restore the "seal" , make it new again . Looks like you might need a new heater core as well ? It looked green in your pics .Might be a good idea to at least get it pressure tested while its out ..

As far as I know there is no gasket at the front join , just goo !

Yeah, the original heater core is shot - in fact the last owner didn't even have it hooked up - they just connected the thermostat inlet to the outlet at the engine side. I hear a lot of new heater core size and quality issues, hopefully I can find a good replacement. Central Corvette has a heater box gasket kit that I will probably get Heater Control Box Gasket Kit that looks complete. I've heard that a lot of owners will have even the new heater core pressure tested. I'll probably do the same as I don't want to do this job again anytime soon.
