Default Tach issues

Hi all
my tach was not working when I bought my car. It turns out the cable was shredded at the tach side, no biggie, swap the cable, right?
well I ordered a cable from corvette central hooked it up, which is I royal pain. The tach did not work. Upon further inspection the cable isn’t reaching the driven gear in the tach. I used the old cable to check to see if the gear in the tach works and it does, I also checked to see if the tach itself works and it does.
it seems the inner cable that actually spins isn’t long enough, I contacted the supplier and they sent another cable and it still doesn’t work.
could it be two bad cables or am I missing something? I was going to order a new cable from another supplier to try that but figured I’d see if anyone has any experience with this.
thx for any help

are they sending you a 23" cable with a screw on connection at the distributor and a push on connection at the tach?
how is your distributor clocked?
is the vacuum advance unit pointing towards the rear of the valve cover?

Yes it’s the screw on and push on and 23”
and the vac is facing the passengers side front
