Ks-Blooie!
Using the forums is it a different kind? Does it matter? I Tried to wire my stereo correctly so it wasn’t draining the battery. Somehow the wires are not the same color as they’re supposed to be because red would be switch power and yellow would be constant.. manufactured 7-7-77 so I just use the late version of 77 as what I’m supposed to be doing to the car when reading the forums.
Well, I Decided to go ahead and wire up the cigar lighter & rear defroster while I was at it.
Located posts here about that too.
great!
Luckily for me Corvette’s have TONS of room to work in so by the time I’m done my back is killing me from having to lurch over the center console, E brake stabbing my ribs, trying to twist my head around and wire things from behind my back.
Not only is it super comfortable and never frustrating ...
oh hell, I’ll just get to the point…
I turn the car on and started a fire. The cigarette lighter exploded, Stereos screwed, and the center console is too. Guess it WASNT the orange wire after all?
But, luckily I put it out before the whole car went... and it’s brand new engine. Which I just finished putting in and haven’t even started yet.
I may have a brand new 77 corvette I guess
what am I doing wrong?

The C3 had a long run- 15 years- plus as you have found-early - mid and late models...
Things changed a lot- the 68 still had an external voltage regulator and the last Corvettes had computers...From listening to "Born to be Wild" to "Little red corvette"
So what works on one year- won't necessarily work on other years. And most of these cars- "Bubba" has done a shortcut or two when repairing and/or modifying.
There are tons of very knowledgeable owners here- pictures are a BIG help- pull your pants up like a big boy- get your hands dirty-no pain no gain and feel free to ask questions!!!

77 was the first year for the new center console. Do you have a wiring diagram? You can PM Papawana

or find one here:

IGN switched power is usually pink. Unless the cigarette lighter started the fire, all I can think is that you are pulling unfused power directly from the battery, and shorting it to ground. Are you trying to hook up an amp, too?

The Best of Corvette for Corvette Enthusiasts
I don't think it's fair to blame the Forum for messing up a custom wiring job without proper fuses, at least without photos!
If the manifolds are still off, now is the time to either go to 2 1/2" collector Rams Horns, or actual headers. If headers, studs will make your life much easier.
