Am restoring my '72 center console and replacing the auto shift slides has brought up a question: the large slide has a notch in the side but I can't figure out what it's for and if it matters what orientation it should be for installation. I've looked at a the AIM, online catalog schematics, searched the forum, etc. but found no answer. Notch toward the driver or toward the PRNDL?
I'll guess: PRNDL.....No......the picture shows a raised arch on the shifter assembly.
Could the notch fit around the raised arch?
It seems in the pic you posted that the notched piece does not slide, but remains stationary, and the smaller piece does the sliding.

Thanks everyone.
Doorgunner: It does slide a bit though not as much as the smaller one. It's an odd feature because both sliders are enclosed in a curved channel top and bottom and the sides can't engage anything due to rivets securing the channel. It will extend backwards into the rear of the console toward the parking brake when in Drive or Low but I can't figure out why it's there. (My original also has it.)
