Have A 75 stingray.
Trying to install an aftermarket usb charger/cigarette lighter.
Got it wired in to the ignition line, and then grounded to the bolt at the base of the steering column (two bolts there) just in front of the pedals.
Phone charges. ButWhen car is RUNNING and phone is charging, we get that buzzzzzzzing noise. Only when both are true!
What did I do wrong?
My best guess is this is not a good grounding point, but for the life of me I can't find one.
My second guess is that my wire connector is loose or otherwise Insufficient.

So your stock cigarette lighter doesn't work? I guess I haven't heard of a USB charger/cigarette lighter.
yeah, the stock lighter, as well as radio and i presume speakers.
I have been having Eastern Corvettes work on it locally, and they're really good.
I'm new to doing car things, so I'm still learning and dont have a garage and dont want to leave the car in a state of disrepair for very long at all.
they said, trying to fix electrical to the stock parts is a nightmare that is likely to involve removing much of the cabin interior. and in their experience, installing one of these on the passenger side in the corner panel below the center console, was what they recommended. wiring it to the ignition power supply.
they're a second-generation corvette only restoration shop, so I default to trusting their knowledge and recommendations.
IGN-only 12V power is an infuriating Chrysler thing. Any reason not to tap power from the stock location?
it sounds like maybe its the key in ignition buzzer? but that didnt used to sound before i made this "repair" yesterday...
its literally coming from under the dash on driver side.
only reason i have not to tap power from stock location is:
+ the corvette guys at Eastern Corvettes told me to use ignition line
+ i dont know where the stock power location is.
Fixing the stock lighter could be as simple as changing the fuse or connecting the wire to the lighter. It is also not a big deal to buy a new lighter socket if it burned out. I don't think that gizmo attached to the side panel looks all that great.
$20
well it looks like i tied into the ignition buzzer.
weirdly, it wasnt working before (never buzzed) and still doesnt work correctly, but now just buzzes when the phone's plugged in.
wrong pink wire.
so i guess i have to disassemble the steering column to go at it this way.
Temporarily tie the power supply to a fuse at the fuse block under the dash and see if the buzzing goes away. If it does then there is electrical interference in the power supply from the steering column. In the old days we would install a transformer, 12 VDC to 12VDC, in the power wire to create a clean 12 VDC supply. It maybe easier just to get the power from the fuse block.
