My 76 reads between empty and a quarter of a tank but when I fill it up it only holds 10 gallons. The gauge does go to full but I am missing what 8 gallons somewhere? I did measure it and when full it reads about 6 inches.
I did but it full now, what exactly does the bladder do and do it or can it run lean. I have been battling some after fire. I did stick a metal tube and it goes down about six inches and I do feel a rubber feeling.
The bladder is a rubber liner that's originally stuck onto the tank inner side , it also comes out the top access hole to form the seal for the cover plate (which has the filler neck and the fuel lines going through it ). Because it's bolted at the top it still holds the fuel but if it comes away from the walls it can restrict the volume of fuel it now can hold . Giving you symptoms you now describe.
The tank is still sealed (unless yours is rusted out.) So you can just drop the tank and carefully trim most of the bladder away , leaving the seal area intact. It's really tough rubber so you need a good knife to cut it.
So besides holding less fuel can I just leave it as is for awhile and it will not hurt the car.
So I would have to drop the tank and take off the plate with the sending unit and then yank the inner liner out.
Firstly yes , you have to drop the tank and open the access hole to get the at the liner. It won't be just ripping the liner out , it's a tough bugger to get out.
As to leaving it as is , very hard to say just how bad it's got . It might leave you fuel starved and stranded on the side of a road or you might be fine for ages with it.
