Default Spindle Support Strut Bushings

So I'm trying to install a new bushings on my spindle support struts, and I'm having some difficulty. For one, the bushing seems to be just about the same size as the hole on the strut, making it hard to get in; even with a press. Second, in my infinite genius I decided to pop the metal insert out of one of the bushings like a shock bushing and now I can't get it back in. Anybody know any good tricks for getting the bushing into the strut, and for putting the insert back into that bushing?
Thanks!

The strut rods came in 2 different sizes, the bushings on the 74 and earlier were 1-1/4" and on 75 and later they went to 1-3/8" diameter
I don't know what year your car is but iIt's always possible someone changed the strut rods at some point and used the smaller ones or they sold you the later bushings

I've got a '77, so I should have the later 1-3/8"s one. I'll make sure to measure everything and see if that's the problem.

Assuming they are correct, try the freeze the bushing, heat the rod trick with a little lube. Best I got!

Also just to add original factory bushings had a metal outer sleeve. Service bushings do not come with this sleeve which in-turn makes it more difficult to install.

I can’t believe I just wrote bush, rod and lube in the same sentence...

So what it looks like is that the rubber will fit fine if the metal insert is not in it. The only problem is when the rubber is in, the hole is only half the size of the insert. Do they make any tools to stretch this stuff out?
Or would I be able to run the earlier two-part bushings on a 77?
