Picked up this '79 that has the stock smog pump with aftermarket smog compliant shorty headers. The car came with Hooker header/sidepipes that I want to run. It was also missing the PCV valve and hose going to air cleaner. I picked up a PCV at Napa today but they didn't have the hose. Said I'd have to go to the dealer for it. So that got me thinking, maybe I'll just go ahead and rip the smog pump stuff off now and install the Hookers along with a new performance air cleaner.
Is the stock carb going to be okay with all the smog stuff removed? Eventually I'd like to build this engine up with heads, cam, intake, carb, etc. or maybe go with a crate 383.
Mine runs great..no pump, no egr, no cats, no heat flapper...no problem...
change stat to 180f, do timing trick..
note pay attention to pcv valve ..it took me forever to find correct for my l82.. hose easy..get the 90 degree pcv valve..
I never throw anything away which isn't always a good thing.
The car is a salvage title car (theft recovery) with an 80-82 nose and rear bumper so bit of a mish mash car. I only paid $4500 for it so it's never going to be a collectable or valuable car.

cool.. that doe snot look like 79 engine compartment fyi..might be good to post vin and ask others.. those valve covers if 79 are L82, and no chrome air cleaner 79..
i think you have an original 80 plus.. emissions removed

VIN is '79. I posted a thread about the car before I bought it. It has iron rear diff, car used be red (has red/black trim tag) and was painted black, VIN indicates L48 but yeah, has L82 valve covers. Haven't been able to check engine number yet as it is hidden behind the smog pump and a/c bracket. Like I said, a mish mash car. It was cheap enough so I don't care.

The EGR removal might benefit you to recurve the ignition and richen the carb mixture. They tend to run lean without the EGR functioning and the distributor specs are set up for emissions. The EGR- exhaust gas recirculating dilutes the fresh air so the calibrations would be suboptimal if you remove it.
The headers will probably want the mixture a little richer too.
