Default Transmission tunnel

How can you tell what transmission came in a 73 by the tunnel?

If it was a standard there is a larger hole cut for the shifter and if it was an automatic there is an added piece of glass by the passenger foot/tunnel to clean the larger transmission

This is the area had a panel added to clear the trans on that side

Much easier to look at the crossmember. Bolt-in = automatic. Weld-in = manual.

Can't get more definitive than that.

Thanks Mooser for the explanation as I wondered what had happened at that location with my 70'

Mooser; is that access for getting the tranny in? I’m just wondering because I’ll kick myself if it would’ve made my install easier.

True from an oem perspective, but these cars have been around a long time and there are kits that make it fairly easy to convert the fixed crossmember to removable. On a manual tranny car it is well worth it for servicing the clutch, so you need to be sure it was oem or the frame wasn’t swapped at some point in the past.

Good point..the frame looks all oem on mine, looks like a small small shifter hole to me but I don't see that extra piece of fiberglass in the passenger footwell.
Anyone have the dimensions of the two different shifter holes?

The added piece has a big lip on the underside of the floor on the passenger side, hard to miss
