Default Reverse switch missing?

So my reverse lights come on with the headlights (I think it was) and I've jacked up the car to check the reverse switch and is it just me or is it supposed to be below the lever?

in the mean time, take out or unplug the reverse light bulbs.

the switch on the 3/4 lever is for TCS, transmission controlled spark. Vacuum advance only in 4th gear.

I replaced the switch on our '68 a couple of weeks ago. Below are a couple of pics (sorry they aren't better) of the new one installed on our M21. Here is a link at Ecklers: https://www.ecklers.com/1968-1978-co...-103972-1.html. They also have the brackets, etc. You'll probably find the harness and plug up on the firewall somewhere - same colors you see on the switch and I doubt (hope??) that a PO didn't just cut it on the harness above the plug. The lead from the switch to the harness plug is about 1 1/2 feet long or so. Hope this helps, Paul

Thanks all, ordered everything I need from Top Flight Auto (Never used them before but they were the best price by 17USD.) Learnt a new thing for buying from the USA and shipping to Australia, our local postal service has a warehouse setup in Portland that we can have items sent to and from there they send it to Australia at a better sipping cost (Most vendors either don't ship to Australia or the shipping is ridiculously expensive, got quoted $100 USD to ship these small parts. So I got free USA delivery to the portland address and from there my estimated postage to Australia is 50 AUD. Gotta be happy with that)

I believe I've seen the plug for the wiring under the console but when I checked it sounds like it should be at the firewall. I've definitely seen it though which is good, wondered at the time what it was but didn't act on it.)

Here is what the connector looks like on the other end. It should be on the drivers side of the bellhousing going down towards the trans switch.

When installing it the best way to set it up is put the car in reverse then with your multimeter on ohms setting (and if it has beep turn that on) then adjust it with the rod in place until the switch closes indicated by good continuity shown on the meter (and a beep if equipped). Keep the meter connected then take it out of reverse and the ohms should go infinite (and no beep). Once you have the switch setup then you can connect it and test it with the reverse lights. This way is a whole lot quicker and easier than adjust the switch, getting out from under the car etc. to see if it works rinse and repeat. Took me one shot to get it right using my method.

Okay update to this one, I've got the required parts to fit.

The muncie is out of the car at the moment waiting on an engine swap, I thought I would hunt down the connector shown above by theandies which should come out from the firewall next to the brake booster, problem is it doesn't.

It is nowhere to be seen, I just cleaned up the engine bay wiring and it does not leave the firewall.

I've had a look at the wiring diagrams and can see where it should be but it's not in the car, I think someone has cut the wires back and retaped them into their respective looms.

If possible can someone check where there pink and green wires come from before exiting the cabin as to which looms each wire comes from.

Thanks

They exit the instrument panel harness (as a pair wrapped in tape) just before the harness connectors for the center cluster.

Hmmm I found a green and pink wire coming out of that wiring harness which would be about the right length, however it goes to a different plug which has never been connected to anything, found it under the radio towards the passenger side, its connected to a three wire connector but only the pink and green wires go to it.

Thinking these are my wires that somewhere along the line someone has messed with, not 100% sure though, unless anyone can tell me what this plug should be

Here's a photo

The picture of the OPs trasmission has something that looks like a backup switch rod attached to the top of the trasmission reverse gear lever. I would be looking there for the existing switch. Hard to see from the picture. It's in a different place?

Hard to tell at that angle but that looks more like the water temp gauge connector (but missing the black center wire) than the BU light switch connector.
Are you sure your vehicle originally came with a 4 speed?
