Default Battery position.

Which way does the battery face in it's compartment. I am installing new hold down brackets. Mine were missing. Are the cables on the battery facing front or do they face the rear of the car. My battery has the cables towards the front of the car. When I redid my car I bought the same type of battery that was in there. If I turn it around with the cables facing the rear the negative will reach but the positive is to short. A picture will help. Thanks. Car is a 72.

Posts are towards the rear. At least that is the way on my '71. Never looked in the AIM. The hold down that bolts in is at the rear. I guess you could put the battery in either way though.

They face the rear of the car on my 77. Always have.

Putting the cables towards the rear gives you more room to get to them.

It is in the AIM. Keep in mind this is for the 1971 model year. YMMV

Same for my 72, they face the rear. No problem with the cables reaching. Maybe yours were replaced.

Probably. Just short enough to aggravate me. Time to put in a cut off switch for the battery.

Hey 540!

I just put in a blade type disconnect I got from NAPA on my 69. Negative cable goes through a big rubber grommet in the floor which requires the battery side post to face forward. Pretty sure its original.

If you use this type disconnect I suggest hooking the disconnect to the cable first. Then put the battery back in and hook it up. Only lost a little blood figuring this out so I have to say this project went smoothly!

I put one in so that the switch is in the glovebox. I beefed up the side of the cardboard insert with fiberglass. Once the battery is in, I have a plastic cup I cut down to slip over the terminals of the switch.

If the cables only fit 1 way, you don't have many options. Want to replace a short cable with a longer one? What difference does it make? Are you going for 100% ncrs correct?
My '69 posts are toward the front, as bought 15+yrs ago. I don't think the cables would be long enough to be towards the back.

My "72, which I bought in 1974 has always had the terminals toward the rear, and the cables reach with no problem. If your cables don't reach, then some changes have been made to your car.

I would imagine so. After almost 50 years someone changed something.
