Default Kick panel question

Hi everyone. I have a 68 coupe, and am in the process of installing the kick panels (the hard panels down by your feet, covering the speaker and air vent door, see pic below). The panel has two screw holes on the firewall side, but what do the screws attach to? I see no holes in the metal between the vent door and the firewall. Are there supposed to be stand-offs or something installed?

On my 72 (which look like those but 68 could be different) there is a single hole that is really hard to see in the middle (up/down) of the vent oval, it's behind the lip on the car side so really hard to see, use an awl to locate / line it up
The other hole at the top holds the courtesy lamp housing to the kick panel and has nothing to do with holding it to the car

Hole in the fibreglass about here (not a nut or insert or anything)

I haven't installed those screws in over 20 years. Between carpet, dash, and door trim, they never move.

Installed, painfully, on my '72, once. The next R & R, I did not install the screw. Stays put just fine....

I use a long regulator (pointed scratch awl) to align the hole while the panel is well away and you can see the hole, then slide it into place, hold it still and pull the regulator out and install the screw. Not really an issue.
I do agree that it's wedged in place pretty good without the screw but it's not bad to put in

You may know this already, but the 68 is a one year only kick panel. The picture you are showing is that of a 69 and up. The 68 has angled vent ribs. Here is a picture below of a 68 panel.

Fancy carpet and trim on the kick panel Mooser....nice job.
I always put the screw back in my kick panel too, although it would stay in place without it.

I just tackled this on my '69.
The hole in the body fiberglass was oversized after years of bigger and bigger screws being used.
I ended up shoving a plastic #8 drywall anchor in the hole and used a #8 screw to hold it in.
Mine would not stay outboard enough without a screw there, so it was needed in my case.
I have an after-market speaker mounted there, plus several wires routed back to the battery in that area, so the kick panel always wanted to creep inboard and obstruct the high beam pedal.
Call me a Bubba, but it works, and no one will the wiser!

Yep, Maybe a. few months ago, I installed them in my 70. Had to push, bang them with the flat of my fist. Even without the screw, they'll stay in place.

I didnt use the screws on my 68. THey are a PITA. Especially with thick carpet jute. Good luck finding an aftermarket one that fits good.
