This isn’t mine, I’m using this as an example. I think it’s a 72 because This one has what 2 other 72’s I know have that I’ve only seen on this year.

First, there is a “T” on the PCV. One part of the hose goes to the carb base, the other hose comes from the left inner fender and routed over top of the brake booster. What is this hose connected to, I’ve only seen this on 72s.

#2 - There is a red wire that starts around the washer/wiper motor and runs over top of the brake booster and to something tucked under the left fender. Again, I’ve seen this wire on several 72s only.

Well, to start with, your premise that the pictured car is a 72 is incorrect. 72’s didn’t utilize air cleaner lid decals. That is a 71 you are showing. The red wire in question is routed wrong. It should go under the master cylinder and brake booster to the horn relay on the inner fender.
The smog hose T is also 1971. There are two hoses, connected with friction tape. The larger T’ed one and the smaller one both connect to the base of the carb.

Well you made me look like an idiot! I didn’t even think about that sticker saying 270 hp and Chevy just eliminated it for 72 rather that show the new low net rating for hp. But you lost me on the vacuum hoses. In the picture here is 2 lines of equal size to and from the PCV in the left valve cover. One side goes to the carb, the other you can plainly see goes over the booster and to something inside the left fender.

I’m probably wrong on this but I thought the horn relay was next to the wiper motor on the side closest to booster. So what are those two things, the first has a unpainted steel lid with 2 bolts holding it to the firewall (looks like a red wire is connected to it.) the other right next to it is a smaller rectangular shape with 2 studs with nuts and has a green wire and orange wire connected?

If the 71 is like the 72, that rubber hose going to the 'T' and PCV valve is coming from the vapor canister couched in the left fender. The red wire might be going to he high speed blower relay that lets the ventilation system fan run on 'high' speed. I am sure I have a few of the names of things here wrong, someone will likely correct them.

You’re correct on the hoses. It’s Definitely the canister hose

I’m trying to clean up the mess of hoses and wires. Tonight I found 2 disconnected hoses, one very small diameter, the other is maybe 3/16” and has a white line on it. Both are going along the left fender side, around the radiator and then they disappear somewhere up front in the nose. When the car ran last the headlights functioned. What else could those lines be for?

Then there’s the rat’s nest of wires on the firewalls. So far I found 4 cut wires I have no idea what they were for.

Pics of the hoses? I guess you can't see where the hoses start?

Headlight washer hose. On 71 but not always used. Windshield washer pump has 5 outlets. Two outlets have a short hose looped between them. I just saw an NCRS 71 Vette and the owner was explaining the extra hoses. I need to do more searching for these parts on my low VIN 71.

You have a beautiful ‘71 Steve. Thanks for the help, I’m going to put a couple hours in working on my ‘vette tonight. It’s easier to see things behind the fenders and out of reach places at night with a flashlight then during the day. I’ll trace those lines and perhaps even take photos of those cut wires I found so far.
Can you provide a photo of your engine bay?

Ok, so the bigger vacuum line has a fat white line it’s coming from the left side of the box the brake booster is attached to and to the left and under the emissions decal. There are 3 lines going into a grommet, one is the hose with the fat white line, second one comes out of that grommet and goes to a tap into the intake manifold and the 3rd one is very short and it comes out of that grommet and turns back into the firewall.

Question - Are the headlight washer supply lines very small? This one is so I believe this maybe that line. It comes from the area in front of the radiator and runs up the fender to the master cylinder and has a clean severed end. I haven’t found anything that line could connect to.

fat white line i believe is headlight relay control vacuum hose. vacuum on that hose tells relay to close headlights. loss of vacuum tells relay to open headlights.
