Default Hardware for side rear view mirror

I can’t tell what it is holding the chrome mirror to its base. I can’t see it well enough through the hole, is it a Phillips screw, did GM have torx back then? Allen head? I’ve tried all these, nothing is grabbing. Can someone tell me how to remove that screw (besides a baseball bat)?

Mine is attached with a 5/32 allen head screw. Also, know that there's a dimensional variation among the various repro verstions of these mirrors. They all look alike but they are not all intrechangeable.

I may have boogered that screw when I was thinking it was a Phillips. I’ll go check now.
Lets suppose the Allen wrench doesn’t do the job, any suggestions short of drilling out that funnel shaped screw to get the mirror off?

There are plenty of posts regarding “Loose” door mounted mirrors. You will see tons of pictures that will get you pointed in the right direction. Use Google and try loose C3 Corvette Side Mirrors. The Allen screw has a funny head, most of the suppliers sell them. Just know that the brackets and mirrors (attachment points) vary somewhat. A recent post has a member that used a piece of rubber hose to get the mirror on the bracket without flopping around.

I did that first thing, those entries don’t address what I need. I couldn’t figure out which fastener is used because nothing is biting. A Phillips, Allen and a star bit wasn’t working. Ok, so now I know it’s supposed to be a 5/32” Allen screw but apparently the PO or whoever before him must have stripped the screw head and It won’t come unscrew out. I’m not looking for the thrill of drilling - anyone have an idea what can work now?

I would try and drill out the special headed Allen Screw with a tiny drill bit, increasing the drill bit diameter in small increments as you go. Maybe use a Dremel to keep from damaging the inside of the recessed hole on the chrome mirror. The special Allen Head Screw threads into the mirror bracket that is attached to the door skin. Use a ton of painters tape to keep the mirror from falling to the ground. Keep your old bracket as they are not standard and you made need to order from different vendors to get the one that best fits your particular mirror. Like all Restoration Parts, they ain’t like the original ones that Chevy used.

Looks like I will have to go this route but first I think they make striped screw extractors, I’ll have to find it before I just start drilling away.

Thanks for the detailed help.
