My guess was 220, but i've read a few 'frame weight' threads already. So... mathematically... if that new frame is 10% thinner metal all around, it should be 10% lighter, yes? I'd guess though that the gussets, and brackets for the important stuff were not thinned, and they make up a pile ov that weight, so that 'saved' 24lbs is probably closer to 15-18lbs. Thats still a good reason to swap a frame, IF... you're ever at the point where they're coming apart anyways. Hmmm...
Looking at it, and other frames, i could still lighten that up a good 5-10lbs or so with some creating cutting, which would offset a 5-10lb gain in chassis-strengthening gussets and seam-welds, etc. The whole endeavor would net you a 15-20lb-ish loss, and a far stronger frame. Win, win, and win.
Looking at those other two frame threads, looks like they made the actual frame thinner in many spots too, which would do more for weight reduction than thinning the steel 10%. 20% lighter in 1980 is a big number... i'd like to see proof ov that too. Thats worth a frame swap for a race car.
Yes I have always wondered if the thinner/ lighter 1980s frame was just urban legend or not....
Surely somebody must have one they can put a dial micrometer on?
Those numbers in the other threads supposedly came from factory books/sources. But now i cant find where i read that, and i mean JUST read that. Its definitely true... but it'd be nice if people could agree on how much weight this was. We really wont know unless YOU can weigh another frame. Or unless someone else could weigh both. I wouldn't even trust someone else somewhere else doing it to compare with yours, as scales and methods can give surprisingly varying results.
And its not just metal gauge, the newer frame looks visibly thinner. I think there's more to that 20%...
