Default steering wheel emblem removal

Hello,
I have a 69 with TT steering wheel. I want to remove the crossed flags emblem from the horn button. I removed the horn button assembly, but noticed the emblem looks to be riveted on . How do I separate the emblem from the button cap. Do I have to use a small chisel to remove the small rivet heads or drill them out? Once off how do I keep the new one on with the rivet heads gone?

Hello scott1959
Are you trying to 1) remove the emblem to transfer it to a new cap, or are you 2) removing the emblem to replace it because the emblem is damaged? If you are 1) removing the emblem to transfer it to a new cap, drill the 3 pins out. If you are 2) removing the emblem to replace it because the emblem is damaged, you must pry the retainer from the horn button. The retainer is the piece with the 3 notches and the "R" stamped on it. I used a small flat blade screwdriver to lift the retainer from the horn button. I worked it from the inside near the 3 notches on the retainer. Plastic emblem may be damaged in this process.

The retainer and the emblem are held in place with 3 pins that are "peened" over. The pins are integral to the horn button, They are not rivets See below:

In the past I have been able to carefully remove the retainers and emblems with a flat blade screwdriver and reuse the pins to secure new emblems.

Horn buttons depicted above are from 1977-1982 w/tilt-telescopic. However the concept is the same for your 1969.

Please read my post # 10, 13, and 14 in the thread below for more info.

Thank you 73'and 75' for the information! I am trying to remove emblem because it is damaged and want to replace it with a new one. So option 2. So if I understand you correctly, I should gently pry of retainer from horn button with flat blade screwdriver. But with the ends of the "rivets" flared out is this easily accomplished? Are the flared "rivets" soft enough to do this?

Yes, it is easily accomplished if you pry evenly and lightly. Pick a Pin and call it Pin #1. Start near Pin #1 and pry up a little. Pry by rotating the flate blade screw driver blade/handle. Move to Pin #2 and do the same. Then on to Pin #3. Go back to Pin #`1 and pry a little more. Go next to Pin #2 , pry up a little more and so on, in a circle, until the retainer pops free. The emblem is now free to be removed. With gentle care the pins can be reused. The pins are soft, however they break off easily if you use too much force or try to pop the retainer in one motion. I have had success with this method. Good luck!
