Howdy! This is my 1st post in about 8 years. I finally gathered up the courage to rewire my '72 from headlights to tail lights, as my car turns 50 August 16 of this year (Day 1 production / VIN 500075) and the wiring is all but falling apart.
In pulling out what appears to have been the original carpet, I see several numbers written in the floor pan, back deck bottom and underneath the rear window. I have nearly all of my interior out now and no signs of a build sheet (no data plate either).
Any clue what these hieroglyphics mean?!?
On a side note, did they offer a wood trim in 72? I have a woodgrain on my shift ****, 3 storage doors in rear and my center console bezel.
84 = sequence number . as the "cars" started down the line the number was chalked on the pieces so the workers knew exactly which body it was ,so the options would go on that particular body .
A/C =air conditioning . so the assemblers knew to put the appropriate venting system on the back deck and under dash etc.
the sequence number went up to 500 ,then restarted at 1 .
sometimes the sequence number was hand written on the build sheet (which might be on your fuel tank ? )

Yep, the custom interior option, available with black or saddle interiors, gave wood trim on the door panels and center console bezel, but not the shift **** or storage doors. The custom interior also included leather seating and cut-pile carpeting.
Thanks for that Larry. I guess one of the previous owners added the shift ****.
Also, I have a type of mesh insert on the door panels (no woodgrain). Without a build sheet or trim tag, it's near impossible to put this back to original.
I can't tell if my car came with factory P/W or it was added later. The wiring appears to be the same age as the rest of my wiring, but there are 2 cut outs w/ a round Corvette emblem where the factory window cranks would be. Weird...
