Can I replace my original 1968 427/390hp motor with a 427LS crate motor .
If you decide to do so, stay in touch. Might be interested in your 427/390. Be sure and shoot some video of it running before you pull it out, if you decide to do this.

Probably, but a LS427 does not carry as much cachet as a BB427 does. Might as well go with a LSX454 in that case.
I disagree. The LS7 makes more power than any oldschool 427 ever made. If you need 100HP more than an old ZL1, then you can always just start modifying the LS. I'd be far more impressed to hear its got a 427 cube LS than a 454 LS. Maybe i'm nostalgic...
I did this swap in my 1969 Corvette. Crate LS7 + 4L75E.
I have a Small Block hood that set perfectly on my car with the LS7 installed.
However my bride made it clear that my BB hood looks much better and that I should keep it! LOL!
In a side note. I get asked all the time if I have a "427" under there. I can honestly say "Yes"! Most folks are happy with the answer and it goes no further.
Sometimes I get asked to open the hood.Almost always I get a "Holy $hit"! Sometimes an OMG!
. . . . . and there is the Corvette Purest. They just tend to roll their eyes or walk away! LOL! 'Cause they know better! Just ask them! LOL!

My current 427/390hp runs great and has good compression and low miles. But it has a slow oil drip that requires the engine to be pulled. That is why I am considering the LS427. Were are you located?
O.P. does not say whether he has a big block hood, or small block hood. But it is great news to hear the small block hood will cover the LS7.
The LS7 is a wonderful piece of technology to settle between the frame rails of the 69. I agree 100% with @69_Shark. You'll never go back to a carbureted engine again.
And as 69_Shark, combining a really nice electronic transmission like the 4L75E with the LS7, will greatly improve drivability and reliability. What A Ride!!!
The only places an LS is tight is between the water pump and rt side upper control arm, and the steering box and left side header. Hood clearance is not an issue..
I did a 67 Nova with LS 427 and a built 4L60E. Small to medium cam. 91 octane tune. 500 RWHP on the chassis dyno. So about 580 or so at the crank. Not big numbers but it ran super. No tuning problems at all. A real pleasure to drive but very quick. Could smoke the tires at 45-50 MPH.
The 427 was a LS2 I had sleeved by RED (Race Engine Development) out of CA. Manley stroked kit. L92 heads. Dressed as a LS3.
