Agreed, most Caliper paint instructions don't call for primer.

If you use something like a dupli-color self-etching primer (the green stuff), I can attest that it holds up to high heat well. Even if you cut steel with a torch, it won't burn back very far from the cut. Start with a light dusting. Then a medium coat after that. Then go to paint. Works for me.
