Default A question about smog equipment.

I'm looking at an 80 that looks like all of the smog equipment has been removed, how difficult is it to source the pump and all the under hood associated parts? From what I understand it's the pump, diverter valve and hoses for both manifolds?

Found a bunch on eBay but if the car works out I'll be looking for some nice parts.

The big, expensive parts would be the original quadrajet carb, the catalytic converter and exhaust manifolds. If you need everything, including the air cleaner, all the brackets, etc, it could get up to $1500+ pretty easily.

Don't walk, run away from that '80. As a fellow Californian I can tell you that you will go through hell getting it to pass smog and then have to go through the hassle and expense of smogging on a dyno every two years. Plus, you will not be able to modify the drivetrain at all. Buy a '75 or older. It's smog exempt, and you can do whatever the hell you want to it with no worries.

Read this again . Lowbuck72 says to stay away from this 80 due to the smog laws in California .

74 not 75 is last year for emission exempt. bone stock original 80 is a PIRA with emissions. as soon as it has been messed with, the hassles go up exponentially. don't buy ANY cali car that isn't emissions current. and better yet, nothing newer than 74.

Sorry, but the L-82 will not pass California smog. For the 1980 model year, the LG4 305 with computer and AT were the only cars certified for California.

The L-82 came from the factory with Ca emissions. While the 305 was the only 1980 offered in Ca both 350s could be registered in Ca.

In the wonderful state of California, 1976 and newer cars need to be smogged. 1975 is the last year of smog exempt. Many laws have been been proposed to change this, but all have been shot down, mostly due to the auto repair lobbyists. If you follow the money, this has got to change sooner or later. OBDII cars (1996 and newer) only need a no engine check light and a visual inspection to pass, easy money. Older cars need a tailpipe test and be put on rollers, cost more, but less profit and more equipment needed. Pre EFI cars are a losing battle. It costs the consumers so much to get that car in compliance, they'd rather junk the beast than go through the hassle and expense. The only hope for the owners of '76 or newer carburated cars is to hope the law of diminishing returns kicks in. How's the climate in your state?
