I’m having a couple issues with my 1978 4-speed and I’m not sure what’s going on. The first is that occasionally my shifter only goes halfway into 1 of the gears and it’s like it hits a brick wall (not fun when it happens while driving). Mainly it’s been when I go into 2nd, but sometimes it’s 3rd or 4th and never multiple, just one at a time and it’s really only every 1/8 times or so. To fix, I have to bring it to neutral and move it until I hear a click and then it’s fine.
The second issue is occasionally if I stall my car (still new to manuals) it won’t even try to start after. I’ll turn the key and nothing will happen. I’ve figured out that if I play with my shifter and especially hear the click when I put it in neutral and move it side to side then go through the gears smoothly it’ll work. I thought the neutral safety switch or something was wrong but now I’m thinking my shifter needs a rebuild, but I really don’t know. 90% of the time it shifts great, but I’m not trying to get into an accident because of this so I figured I’d asked to see if anyone had an idea of what’s wrong.
no neutral switch i am aware of.. but must have clutch fully depressed to start
get some best you can pics of bolts linkage etc.. also history.. always done this? new etc.. also check for fluid in transmission. should be able to touch fluid from top hole
