Hi. I have a clutch fan on my 69 that I would like to clean up and perhaps spray it with some Eastwood AlumiBlast to make it look a bit better. My question is that it has a fair bit of what looks like black overspray paint on it. The rest of the dirt and grime has come off but not the paint. Is it safe to simply put the clutch fan into paint stripper or will this ruin what is inside that controls the way it operates at different temps? It is a Schwitzer style so I don't want to ruin it just trying to clean it up. Thanks and take care.
Don’t immerse it. Methylene chloride strippers aren’t commercially available any longer but whatever chemical product you use will potentially attack the seal.
Walnut shell or soda or dry ice blasting will work best if you are aiming for perfection but unless you are shooting for a NCRS award, I would simply clean it up with small diameter wire brushes and lacquer thinner, avoiding contact with the seal.
