Default Differential fill & flush

Hi everyone

I bought some cheap gear oil to do some fills and flushes on my differential.
Cleaning the inside with brake cleaner would eat the seals. (according to forum members)

Once filled with oil, I can also check for leaks (maybe the seals are leaky...).

The diff. is off the car. Where should I pour the fluid in?
Here are two pictures.
1. Can the vent hole on top be used? It is higher and because of that I can add to max level. If yes, how can I remove the plastic cap?
2. Should I use the 'pipe plug' on the RH side to fill it?
3. Should I use 'bolt plug' on the bottom side to fill it?

Pipe plug on the right side
Final level is when it just starts to run out of that hole (car/ diff level of course)

The bolt on the bottom shouldn't go into the housing...
M

PS I would think that varsol would be ok to wash down the insides with, might dislodge some stuff from the sludge that's better left alone but shouldn't hurt any seals. Gary R. should be along and might have better solutions. For the sake of a gasket I'd pull the cover and have alook

When it does, usually not a good thing.

Do NOT touch the vent plug.

The square head plug on the right side of the rear cover is the ONLY access you need to have. Some who rebuild the differentials will put a drain plug in the main housing but you need to know what you are doing for that to avoid drill shavings being trapped inside.

I would recommend you heat up the flush lubricant before use.

What should the temperature be?

Nothing crazy hot as you don’t want to expose yourself to injury but I’d suggest 65 to 80 Celsius.

Back in the day we drained out the old oil and filled the piping plug hole level with automatic transmission fluid to "scrub" the gears and friction discs clean for about 10 minutes...then we thoroughly drained the A/TAX fluid and refilled with the correct differential oil.

Since the diff. Is out of the car, you can use a 1/2" drive electric drill to spin the input yoke I forward and reverse for 10 minutes.(PLEASE CORRECT ME IF THIS IS NO LONGER A GOOD METHOD)

Default Seals

Since differential is off the car you might as well replace seals! There's no better time to replace all three!!

I want to test for leaks first. If there are no leaks. I will leave the seals alone (replacing the seals is a lot of work).

The following bracket is added with the 4 bolts going into the diff.

Won't the diesel eat the seals?

Driving69 posted a pic of when the bolt breaks through the diff cover instead of where the 4 bolts that are on the actual diff housing, that might be what's throwing you off

warm the shop up for a few days.
lay diff atop a bucket, with Side fill hole at lowest point & perpendicular to floor.
let diff drain into a bucket for a couple days.
Refill diff with good gear oil and proper posi lube.
don't overthink this.

When diff's in vehicle, I've sucked gear oil out with a turkey baster & hose; dedicated manual suction pumps are sold as well.

There are plans on interweb to instruct how to install a bottom drain.
