Regular is fine for your 454. GM lowered the compression on all of their engines in 1971 to allow them to run on unleaded regular. This was in preparation for the introduction of catalytic converters in 75, and the expected elimination of premium fuels by the end of the 70's. Using any higher grade fuel is really just wasting money.

My engine isn't exactly stock so a different issue but the only thing I'll add is that, at least around here, the high-test fuel is the only one that doesn't contain ethanol.
10% for the regular, 5% for the mid-grade and 0% for the high test
