Default Whats this stuff on my L82?

Tank leaks out if u pump it a couple of times and there's a lot of trouble starting and getting it to stay running. Have a new pump with the correct S hose and return line coming.

Decided to go down today and really take a look at the motor. I'm 18 and learning got the car for 5k so forgive me if these are stupid questions. Idk what this stuff is but it's all over the exhaust manifold... all over everything... it's all over the transmission, oil pan, etc. Gas is all over a lot of stuff too due to the fuel pump. My guess is needed new gaskets? (maybe valve cover gaskets?) Looks rather fresh but obviously, it's been built up to a rather excessive amount. Plan on cleaning the block right now but not sure what to be concerned about and what to address other than the fuel pump. Took off the air cleaner and it looks like there's oil resting on the carb that doesn't seem good...

I also found a cut yellow wire (maybe burned? I've attached pics)

All in all super confused any help is greatly appreciated.

that white line is to the heater water shut off valve.
yes valve covers leak..
what do you want to do? Are you diy? If so very patient people here willing to help.

There are a few things not routed correct due to aftermarket air cleaner..wouldn’t by chance have the original plastic air cleaner routing? Don’t toss parts, you have a lot of original parts that can perform..

another link for that carburetor…
and diagram..not knowing your year…79

Okay. I'll do my best here.

Yes, its leaking gas from the pump... I have a new one on the way I have not started the car or anything like that since I am now aware of the severity of the issue.
What white line?
Okay valve covers leak yes I figured I'll buy the gaskets
Do u know what that cut orange wire is?

I'm 18 and am determined to fix this car I'll keep it fairly original but I already got a new true dual chambered exhaust system on the way and maybe down the line planning to change to some better heads. I picked up this car for 5k running and driving it ran smoothly until the fuel pump started acting up. There's been some bubba wiring but small stuff like wrong fuse types put in places and blown fuses and wires unplugged or stuff like brake light switch missing. I was just concerned about all this build-up on the motor and IDK what it is or where it's coming from... a mixture of oil and stuff? how should I clean it off?

I would start with a can or three of carb cleaner and spray the carb, intake, valve covers, and front of the engine block. Follow that up with a can or two of engine degreaser and spray it down at a pressure wash car wash. Be careful about getting water inside the distributor and down the carb, maybe plastic bags over those at the car wash. Other than those two things, everything else can get really wet with no issues.

Since your A/C has been removed or partially removed that cut wire your holding is most likely a Lt.Green wire.
It once started on the A/C control selector switch MAX-NORM position.
It controlled 2 things, the idle stop solenoid automatic only and supplied voltage to the low pressure cutoff switch.
So anytime your slider is in the MAX or NORM position you would have voltage to that end.
What air cleaner are you using?
Look at Interpons, that is correct for a 79.

Could I use brake cleaner instead of carb cleaner or is that harmful?

I truly don't know the chemical differences between the two. The carb cleaner is used around aluminum, dichromate plated parts, rubber & plastic so that's why I'd tend to go that route. Brake cleaner: not so much.

What made me believe your car was equipped with A/C is your 3 pulley setup and the special #2 exhaust manifold bolt/stud.
I now see your heater hose(s) are located much higher at the firewall.
Anyways, the yellow wire your holding I think is HOT anytime the ignition switch is in the ON position and once landed at the resistor on your heater box.

If in fact that is the correct yellow wire in the diagram above it would have been wrapped along with the Lt Blu & Orn wire with a 3 wire connector landing at resistor(s)

@rednrebel
also on that exhaust.. i suggest replacing the heat riser valve.. go to post 55 for the spacer needed... and or for a while i ran without spacer or riser.. but spacer does keep away from starter more..

https://www.corvetteforum.com/forums...79-w-ac-3.html

DO NOT BE AFRAID TO OPEN NEW post on each topic or project you are working on..such as exhaust, or white line, fuel pump etc.. you have a lot of small projects that may need more focus to help.. folks on here are very patient as they have with me..
for example fuel pump.. where is leaking? it may have put fuel in engine so check oil..that could be its own thread to start..what pump do folks recommend, easiest way to change etc.... etc..

also some clear photos for example of your engine from 4 sides and above also helps other comment as to some un-seen things that may help you like shrouding of radiator, fan pulleys, ..

Thanks, wish I could take credit for that but the guys that pulled the emissions and installed the Sniper did all that.
