I took the car out today to get some new tires. 65 on Thursday. 29 when I pulled out of the garage this morning. My car has a top but it’s a convertible so I never put it up. Didn’t get very far and the wood grain laminate on the console popped up. About halfway there the static cling deck lid protector started blowing off. Oh well.

So what kind of adhesive should I use to adhere the laminate?

Too cold to wash off the blue.

My Fake Wood Appliqué did the same thing. I told Zip who sent me a new one and bought real veneer on eBay. I used an Xacto Knife then used Weldwod Contact Cement. The wood has not come up, and looks pretty good. Oh, it is pretty hard to cut the veneer, so there are a few chips if you look close.

Do you have a picture of what you did. Did you stain or finish your veneer?

I would probably flip the woodgrain upside-down and spray the backside with 3M spray adhesive. I don't think it needs to be super 90 ..just whatever you have ..or whatever you think you'll use in the future. But you could use 90. Super-90 builds kind of high compared to regular spray adhesive. The 'best' way to apply adhesive to the base side would be to mask it off and cut open (with a knife) the area you want to apply adhesive. Then spray that area too. Wait 3 minutes or so, then clamshell the two halves together. Contact adhesive is really designed to be applied to both surfaces to be adhered, allow for tack-up timme a coupe minutes, then sandwich the pieces together. Let it sit in the shade for a full day or longer to set up harder before you expose it to the warm sun.

What a lot of guys do ...and this doesn't work well at all (and goes counter to the instructions) is to apply a whole bunch of adhesive on one piece, then try to adhere that piece (wet) to the main piece. It won't last. That's not the right way to do it.

Ideally you would do this at room temp or higher, like 75* or more. If you attempt to adhere it in a too-cold ambient temp, then when it gets hot outside in the sun, it may well buckle from expansion.

I believe that the stain was applied before cutting out the wood veneer, and then two coats of spray satin poly urethane. Chevrolet used to sell the actual wood insert, that matched the wood on the Deluxe Interior door cards. You will need to use the fake wood appliqué for the template. I think it took me a couple of tries, as the veneer is not easy to cut across the grain. I can get a picture of the console if want me to. The contact cement has a brush and the pot metal console and wood is coated. After a few minutes, then the wood is press onto the console.
