Default P/S Pump Location? :(

The power steering pump on my '79 is mounted under the alternator on driver's side. The alt bracket is right above the p/s pump cap making it quite difficult to remove not to mention trying to actually get p/s fluid in there. I managed to put some in but getting the cap back on was even harder. It came off so it has to go back on, right? I got it back on but didn't bother trying to remove it again to check the level.

Photo below. Is this the correct factory position?

Yep that is about right. I also have a long skinny funnel to fill these. The cap goes on but takes a little finesse to get it in correct.

Sadly, as much as my power steering system has leaked, I've become a pro at taking off an putting back on the pump cap. 79 here as well, so same boat as you. Not sure who the genius was that designed the setup but I'd like to write them a "thank you" note.

^^^^^^^^^^ Exactly.
If your PS leaks enough, you become real good at pump cap removal.
I can do it blind-folded.

Above mentioned longer belt makes loads of difference......doesn't take much to make it much easier to get off and out....

I ground a small flat in the side of the pump cover-makes it a ton easier to get on/off and doesn't leak.
