Default 1973 Transmission leak

Hello everyone,

About last week, I noticed oil on my garage floor. It looks like its coming from the transmission. Any common reason why? What to look for?

Oil (black or amber) or automatic trans fluid (red) or gear oil (standard, also black)
How long since the car started or moved?

Hey M, sorry for the delayed response. The oil color is brown and the car hasn't moved/started in about 3 weeks. I haven't crawled underneath the car yet but it looks like its coming from the area of where the firewall is. Transmission is full of oil. Maybe a seal?

Rear main seal? Automatic or manual?

A photo or three would help, even if you just hold your phone under the car (with some light).

Brown would sound more like motor oil as the trans fluid if pretty red (or should be)
How much are you seeing on the floor? a tiny amount of oil can make a big puddle...
If it's not a huge puddle (like a dessert plate type of thing) and the car hasn't started or moved in a while I wouldn't be too concerned right away, some of the seals (rear main) will sort of dry out and shrink a little and might let some oil seep by after time (and then others can sit for years without issue) but once the car starts and moves a bit everything goes back to normal.
OR
its one of the major seals and it's going to be a big deal to change

So hope for the cheap one first and worry about the expensive one when you're sure
